Research for children in a complex world. Epidemiology for effective prevention.
Dr. Fiona Stanley Director, Telethon Institute for Child Health Research; Chair, Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth; Professor, School of Pediatrics and Child Health University of Western Australia
Abstract: What do we, as epidemiological researchers, need to do for children and youth in this challenging 21st Century? We need to develop an evidence base around the prevention of disease, disability and dysfunction, around the enhancement and enabling of healthy child development and wellbeing and how the research that we do can make a difference not only to children but through them and their families to the whole of our society. We need to understand that pathways into disease not only start early but they also start in societal environments that are not solely the responsibility of health jurisdictions but include education, workplaces, employment, town planning, advertising, nutrition, substance abuse, economic pressures, pace of life, media, technologies, housing, transport, city planning, taxes, and societal valuing of children. As researchers and workers interested in the health and well being of children, we need a concerted effort to change the way we use our data, research and evidence to focus more on prevention, on better and effective use of interventions and treatments.
