This resource is the final component of the project "Engage, Enable and Empower: Advancing the Children's Environmental Health Agenda." What's on the Menu Today? addresses the common behaviour of children exploring the world through hand-to-mouth activity. This resources provides a short list of simple actions to lower risks to children.

The Canadian Child Care Federation, with the support of the Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and Environment (CPCHE) partners, received funding from the National Population Health Fund to undertake a community engagement project with the goal of raising the level of children's environmental health awareness and literacy amongst three key practitioner groups and moving them to action. The three practitioner groups include the following:

  • Child care practitioners
  • Family physicians and other health intermediaries
  • Public health workers

Everyday you work to keep children safe, develop their minds and nurture their spirit. As child care providers you play an important role in the health, happiness and well-being of children.

Child care providers can:

  • Provide important information to parents and community members on ways to protect children by suggesting specific actions and sharing resources like websites, checklists and fact sheets.
  • Act as role model by helping others to see how important yet easy it can be to take action.
  • Influence policy at the provincial and local level through your professional associations which in turn reduces risk to children.
  • Make changes in your workplace - big or small. This might include buying alternative cleaning products or adding organic and local foods in your meal programs.
  • Get involved with the Children's Health & Environment Partnership in Manitoba by joining our Daycares/Schools Constellation.
