We all looked forward to the changes - even with some excitement! We feel that the changes that we have embarked upon throughout the years, many of which are not mentioned here, were not only positive for our health and well-being, but many of them we consider to be the right choice for the environment. Indoor house repairs and painting were somewhat challenging but we knew that we had to keep the indoor air pollutants to a minimum not only for a toddler but for all of us. We chose prefinished hardwood floors for minimal dust and easy cleaning. Painting was done with latex paints with very low solvent content. And we still managed to use vibrant colours. We also used a latex urethane and not a solvent urethane for our new window trim. Safer food storage was always an issue as our plastic containers began to feel sticky - not from food but likely from the plasticizer in the plastic coming to the surface. We didn’t like the smell of the plastic containers and didn’t feel comfortable using them anymore. Potential health effects were of concern to us, and in particular, for our great nephew. We decided to replace our food storage containers with glass and/or stainless steel. We took it one step at time - gradually phasing out our plastic containers. The replacement of a mattress set was a bigger challenge and expense. However, it seemed absolutely necessary. One member of the family is very sensitive to the chemicals and synthetic materials used in newer mattresses. It took some research but we eventually found a safe mattress made with organic materials. Our philosophy has been to take baby steps. We try to switch over to alternative consumer products gradually. Now this includes switching to organic sheets and towels. Little Andrew has already begun showing signs of sensitivity to scented products and some dyes. Fortunately, with the availability of unscented soaps, detergents, cosmetics and general household products, we have been able to prevent the common skin irritations and allergic reactions that many suffer from. It is important to us to share our experiences with those who have expressed an interest in making similar changes to their home environment. Every little bit makes a difference! As we continue to do projects in the house and around the yard, we keep in mind the impact of these endeavours on our health and that of the environment. And we tackle them with enthusiasm!

In our extended household, changes to include safe consumer products – including household products, cosmetics and even a mattress, became a necessity because of health reasons. It’s amazing how innovative we can be under these circumstances.
